Handbuilt Wheels

In addition to stocking all the standard size machine-built wheels, we also offer handbuilt wheels. Handbuilt wheels offer a level of quality and durability that a machine-built wheel simply cannot deliver. Handbuilt wheels are better and stronger, not only because they are built from higher quality parts, but also because a skilled wheelbuilder can build a wheel that has much higher and more even tension than a machine can produce. This level of precise tension is what makes a wheel strong.

Handbuilt wheels are more expensive than machine-built wheels, but they typically last much longer. They are a great choice for commuters, as they are far more capable of withstanding the daily abuse that our city streets have to offer.

All the handbuilt wheels we sell are built in-house by one of our several skilled wheelbuilders. We stand behind our workmanship, too - all handbuilt wheels come with a handbuilt wheel warranty. We keep several different types of handbuilt wheels in stock, and if there's something you want that we don't have, we'll build it for you.

By the way, we also offer a wheelbuilding class if you want to learn how to do it yourself.

The Land of Used Parts

If you know what you're looking for, and you don't mind spending a little bit of time looking, then come visit our used parts area. We do try to keep it organized, but honestly, you never know what you'll find in there. There's some good stuff, and there's some not-so-good stuff. There's some good stuff buried under the not-so-good stuff. But it's often worth a look. The used parts area is a good resource if you know what part you need and want to do it yourself, or if you're looking for something for a slightly older bike and the parts aren't made anymore.

We do have some guidelines about used parts:

  • The used parts area is self-serve. We can't help you look for stuff.

  • Used parts are sold as-is. Some of the parts in there will function perfectly, others will function OK, and still others are just useful for parts. We can't guarantee that a used part will work for you, although we will be fair about what we charge for it (as in, if it looks like hell, we won't charge much).

  • Used parts are not returnable. You need to know what you're looking for. If you aren't sure, don't buy it.

  • We can't install used parts. How would you like to pay a labor charge for us to install a used part that didn't work well? Answer: you wouldn't. That's why we don't do it.

  • We don't buy used parts. Don't worry, we're not buying the wheels or seats or bags or lights that get stolen from parked bicycles. That bothers us as much as it bothers you.

  •
